ABORIGINAL SOCIAL PLAN
The Northern Sydney Aboriginal Social Plan is a document compiled by ten Councils in the Northern Sydney Region to address the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the area.
The aims of the Social Plan are to:
* Improve outcomes for the Aboriginal community living in Northern Sydney
* Improve coordination and relationships with government on Aboriginal issues
* Increase sharing and co-operation between individuals, groups, and agencies across Northern Sydney
The first Aboriginal Social Plan (a five year plan) was adopted in 2000. Manly Council, as part of the Funding Group of councils, contributed financially to its ongoing implementation. The Plan was reviewed and second draft produced in 2006 by an Aboriginal Project Officer after extensive community consultation with Aboriginal people in the Northern Sydney Area.
In February 2007, Manly Council endorsed the second Aboriginal Social Plan 2007- 2011. Key objectives of the Plan include, among other things, improved access for Indigenous people to resources and health services, encouraging education and cross-cultural awareness, and facilitating the process of reconciliation.
