Councillor Jean Hay AM (Mayor)

Councillor Hay is a lifelong resident of Manly and was elected to Manly Council in 1987, being elected Mayor in 2008 for a four year term.

She was previously Mayor of Manly from 1999 to 2004 and has served on all major Council Committees and numerous other Committees.

In June 1998, Councillor Hay was awarded Membership of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to the community through local government, community action and sporting groups, and fundraising for welfare and health education programmes.

In 2001, Councillor Hay was awarded a Centenary Medal.

Councillor Hay has also been presented with a Distinguished Service Award for Surf Life Saving,  a Paul Harris Fellowship for Community Service (the highest award given by Rotary); and was awarded the Outstanding Service Award of the NSW Local Government Association for more than 20 years of service to Local Government.

Councillor Hay was in 2007 also awarded the Manly Daily Centenary Medal.

Councillor David Murphy (Deputy Mayor)

Councillor David Murphy was formerly chair of the Ivanhoe Park Precinct Community Forum and has been a Manly resident all his life. He is qualified in Fitting & Machining, Mechanical Engineering and Contract Engineering, having worked more than25 years in the power industry.

Councillor Murphy has completed the:

• Higher School Certificate
• Fitting and Machining Certificate
• Contract Engineering Certificate
• Basic Scaffolding Certificate
• Electrical testing and tagging certificate

He is formerly:
• President of the Balgowlah Boardriders (1 year)
• Ivanhoe Park Precinct Chair (2 years) and Deputy Chair (1 year)

Councillor Barbara Aird

Councillor Aird is married with four children and has lived in Manly for 35 years. Councillor Aird describes herself as being passionate about protecting our unique natural environment and believes we also have a responsibility to be caretakers for future generations.

Councillor Aird has served as an independent Councillor on Manly Council since 1995 on a broad range of committees, including Access, Climate Change Working Group, Community Safety,  Conservation Strategy, Environment, Landscape and Urban Design, Scientific Advisory Panel, Sydney Coastal Councils Group, Visitor and Community Board, and Waste.

Councillor Lauren Elder

Councillor Elder was elected to Manly Council in September 2008.  She has a professional background in training, quality assurance and process management. Councillor Elder is an Instructor and Vice Patrol Captain with the Manly Life Saving Club.

Councillor Cathy Griffin

A member of The Greens, Cathy Griffin is a mother of three and has been a Manly resident for 11 years. She gained wide experience in administration, logistics and facilities management from 17 years service in the Regular Army as an Officer. As Past Chair of the Little Manly Precinct Community Forum and as a member of the Manly Council Environment and Climate Change Committees, Cathy has a history of active community consultation.  Participation in the North Head Sewerage Treatment Plant Community Consultative meetings as well as the Quarantine Station Community Consultative Committee also contributes to Cathy's knowledge and understanding of the community and environment in which she lives.
Cathy is interested in and committed to social justice, ecological sustainability, grassroots democracy and peace; the four pillars that inform the Greens polices.

Councillor Adele Heasman

Councillor Heasman is the Deputy Mayor of Manly and has been a Councillor since 1999. She has lived in Manly for more than 30 years, has been married for 20 and has three children. Councillor Heasman's commitment to Manly is reflected in her involvement with local church and community groups and her active participation in a range of Council Committees.

Councillor Alan Le Surf

Councillor Le Surf has lived in Manly his whole life.  He is a Sergeant of Police with 30 years experience across a range of duties including training and development, event planning and management and general duties. He has had an association with Manly Council since 1979 when he was a member of the Manly Youth Council.  He established Kangaroo Rock and is a member of Manly Apex 40. Formerly the Chairman of Northern Beaches Life Education he was also the Life Education NSW State Chairman.

Councillor Le Surf has been a member of various Council Committees including the Manly Community and Visitor Board, Manly Sister City Committee and Manly Arts Festival Committee.

Councillor Dr Peter Macdonald

Dr Macdonald previously served four terms on Manly Council, was Deputy Mayor from 1995 to 1996, and served as Mayor from 2004 to 2008, and also represented Manly in the NSW State Parliament for eight years. Dr Macdonald has recently spent time working as a doctor in Iran, East Timor and Papua New Guinea and operates a general practice in Manly.

Councillor Richard Morrison

Councillor Morrison has been on Council since 1999. He is a pharmaceutical chemist and has been a small business proprietor in Seaforth for 20 years. Councillor Morrison is also a keen yachtsman, skier, hiker and golfer.

Councillor Mark Norek

Councillor Norek previously served on Manly Council from 2004–2008 and is a former Deputy Mayor of Manly Council (2007–2008).

He has been the Managing Director of national events companies for 20 years. His business 'Life’s an Adventure’ specialises in outdoor activities such as kayaking, bushwalking and mountain biking.

Councillor Norek is a former chairman of the Ocean Beach Precinct (2002–2004).

He has a background in physical education studies and training. He is a father of one child with another on the way.

He plays hockey and cricket, and enjoys swimming and the outdoors.

Councillor Craig Whitting

Councillor Craig Whitting has a daughter and has lived in the Manly District for 20 years. He is a Northern Beaches teacher, community activist and small business owner. He is also an active member of Queenscliff Surf Life Saving Club, and Sailability Manly where he teaches people with a disability how to sail.

Councillor Whitting has represented Manly as:
• a member of Northern Beaches Health Care Consultative Committee
• as a member of Manly’s Visitor and Community Board
• as a Precinct Committee Member.

Councillor Whitting's career has taken him around the world before settling here on the Beaches. He now teaches in the hospitality industry at TAFE NSW – Northern Beaches College and has taught there for the past 16 years he also runs his own recruitment business.

Councillor Whitting's work committees have included NSW Teachers Delegate, Teachers Federation National TAFE Council Delegate, NSW Labor Council Delegate, Northern Sydney Institute Executive Committee Member and Chairman.
