Fauna Watch - Frogs & Fungus Threat

In an attempt to halt a fungal disease threatening the well-being of our frog population, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is preparing guidelines aimed at urging youngsters not to handle frogs and to return all tadpoles to their exact place of origin.Australia is home to at least 240 of the 2000 frog species recorded world-wide and NSW has 70 of these frog species alone!

The disease, chytrid fungus is thought to have been introduced to Australia in the 1970s and is considered to be a main contributor to declining frog numbers.

Other factors may include climate change, the diminishing ozone layer and habitat disturbance.
