GL@M (Gay and Lesbians at Manly)
This is a social support program for gay, lesbian, trangendered, or young people questioning their sexuality. It creates a safe and enjoyable space for young people where they can be themselves, have fun, and access support if they wish.
Objectives
- To provide an environment which is non-judgemental, as well as physically and emotionally safe.
- To create access to a safe space where participants may discuss issues that are important to them as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning young people.
- To create opportunities for fun, laughter,
and friendship.
What happens in the group?
The group meets fortnightly on Tuesday nights and has social and educational components. On a social level the group gets out and about for dinner, coffee, movies etc. The group also participates in planning events and exploring issues impacting upon young people including relationships, making connections, sexuality and coming out.
Why do we need social support for young GLBTQ people?Social isolation is a situation common to many young people living on the north shore and northern beaches who experience same-sex attractions. This isolation is often fuelled by a sense of insecurity about the reactions of others. Many gay and lesbian young people will go to great lengths to avoid others finding out about their sexual orientation. It is important for young gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning people to meet others similar to them who they can relate to and form friendships with. Peer support groups are invaluable in this regard.
