Manly Council: NSW's first FAIR TRADE Community!
In September 2008, Manly Council officially received Fair Trade Accreditation from the Fair Trade Association of Australia & New Zealand (FTAANZ) making Manly NSW's first Fair Trade Community! What this means is that over time, Fair Trade will become an increasingly visible phenomenon in Manly, with growing support from various sectors of the community. If you would like to see your business, school, faith group, restaurant or cafe support Fair Trade, contact Council's Community Volunteer Coordinator on 9976 1658 to learn more. Alternatively visit www.fairtrade.com.au for further information on Fair Trade.
As part of our commitment to Fair Trade, we host a Manly Fair Trade Market twice a year.
Manly Fair Trade Markets
Manly Fair Trade Markets occur twice a year, typically during Fair Trade Fortnight in May and then again in December for Christmas. A range of Fair Trade vendors are showcased along with entertainment, kid's activities, Fair Trade coffee and chocolate and much more... The markets are something not to be missed!
Upcoming Market: Saturday, November 28th 2009, 9am to 4pm at Manly Wharf Forecourt
As Manly has recently been accredited as the first Fair Trade community in NSW, second in all of Australia, our markets are a celebration of this amazing achievement promoting Manly's Fair Trade status throughout the community and beyond.
If you're a vendor, a performer, a volunteer etc. and you'd like to participate in the Fair Trade Markets in November 2009 please contact the Community Volunteer Coordinator for more information on 9976 1658 or email volunteering@manly.nsw.gov.au.
The May Fair Trade Market was a brilliant success!
On Saturday 9th May, Manly Council hosted a Fair Trade Market at Manly Wharf and what a crowd we had! The Wharf was overflowing with people sorting through the vibrant selection of Fair Trade stallholders goods, from shoes to jewellery and chocolate, patrons were exposed to the wide range of Fair Trade products that already exist. While shopping through the beautiful products, visitors to the Market were serenaded by the rhythms of the very talented local musicians who played throughout the day.
Manly Council's Information Booth was manned by members of the Manly Fair Trade Working Party who were wonderful and had participants buying raffle tickets and filling out Fair Trade surveys. The raffle raised $607 in proceeds - which was donated to World Vision's 'Don't Trade Lives' Campaign as they focus on eliminating child labour in the cocoa/chocolate industries.
We had 36 stalls, Free Kid's Face Painting and Entertainment throughout the day. So if you didn't make it, or did and can't wait for the next one, don't miss out on the upcoming November Fair Trade Market (see above).
