Background:
Manly Youth Council (MYC) was established in 1968 and is reportedly the first of its kind in NSW. Designed to form a representative group of interested people 15 to 25 years of age, it provides an effective forum for youth in the Manly area and acts as a co-ordinating body for youth services in Manly. Manly Youth Council meets monthly at the Manly Youth Centre, Kangaroo Street, Manly. Membership is free and open to any young person 15 - 21 years of age.
What do we do?
- Organise one-off projects, for example - Youth Week festivals, community art projects, Youth Council training camps and issue specific activities such as the women's safety project.
- Lobby for resources, opportunities and funds for young people.
- Attend conferences and seminars on issues for young people.
- Develop policies and recommendations for local government.
- Provide and manage professional youth services through government grants.
Objectives of Manly Youth Council
- To foster a better understanding between young people and local government.
- To create an active interest amongst young people in the Manly area in local affairs, especially where this involves young people searching for ways and means to improve community life and amenity.
- To create and foster a sense of community and to advance the needs of young people in the Manly area.
- To encourage debate and discussion on matters affecting young people to help them form opinions.
- To be a co-ordinating body who shall call upon and involve other people/organisations to plan and implement community activities.
- To carry out its activities in accordance with Manly Council's youth policy and the conditions of any funding body providing a grant.
- To assist Manly Council in policy formulation on youth affairs.
- To be an auspice body for the administration and management of funds and resources generated or granted to it in satisfaction of the above objectives.
Funding:
Manly Youth Council receives funding and assistance from Manly Council to facilitate the administration and co-ordination of its services. It also receives project/service funding from the NSW Government. Other sources include charges levied on participants, fundraising activities and donations.
Membership:
Manly Youth Council membership is open to young people who live, study, work, or have other connections to the Manly area. Expression of Interest applications for membership on Manly Youth Council are available in the attached documents.
