Green Business Awards 2006

This year Manly Council's Green Business Awards focused on businesses participating in the Sea Change for Sustainable Tourism program.

The Green Business Awards is an annual awards initiative that has been run by Council for the past 10 years. The aim of the awards is to promote environmental stewardship within the local Manly business sector and provide community recognition for 'best practice' environmental management.

This year the award categories and winners were:

Water Use Management - International College of Management, Sydney

Waste Management - Manly Food Cooperative

Energy Efficiency - Manly Boat & Kayak Centre

Winners received certificates and $750 in prize money to spend on environmental initiatives.

Highly Commended awards for overall excellence in environmental management were also presented to Candy's Cafe and Oceanworld Manly.

Congratulations go to all award recipients!

Signage at Manly Wharf

A super-sized version of the program signage has been installed at Manly Wharf, the gateway to tourism in the Manly area. The prominent signage, on the back of one of the Sydney Ferries ticket offices, practically hits visitors to Manly in the face as they alight from the ferry.

It is hoped that the sign will generate significant interest in businesses that bear the Sea Change logo.

The sign at the Wharf will remain in its place until the ticket offices are demolished in the Wharf refurbishment later this year.

Advertising on Manly Tourism website

We have managed to secure some prominent advertising space on the Manly Tourism website for Sea Change for Sustainable Tourism.

The program logo appears on the site’s home page and it links to the same ad image used in the signage at the Manly VIC. For those visiting the site that are interested in finding out more information about the program, there is also a link to the Sea Change for Sustainable Tourism website. This website is a great vehicle for spreading the message about Sea Change for Sustainable Tourism and the businesses participating in the program.

The space on the website was generously donated by the organisation that manages the site - Stralia Web. This is a great example of good corporate citizenship!

Signage at Manly VIC

Signage explaining the meaning of the Sea Change for Sustainable Tourism accreditation scheme has been installed at the Manly Visitor Information Centre (VIC). The signage is designed to give the program exposure and meaning to both tourists and locals and ultimately generate more interest in businesses participating in the program. Staff at the VIC have information on the program and a list of participating businesses.

Television coverage

Craig Moulds from Manly Boat & Kayak Hire appeared on Channel 7’s ‘Sunrise’ program during the live weather cross at 7.30am on 8/11/2005. Craig was asked to be on the show after one of the program’s editors read the article that appeared in the Manly Daily on 4/11/2005 on local businesses that are participating in Sea Change for Sustainable Tourism. Although the segment on ‘Sunrise’ with Craig was brief, he managed to get a quick plug in about the Sea Change program – well done Craig! This is a great example of how involvement in the program can generate some great PR for businesses.

Accreditation Awards Ceremony

The first cohort of local tourism business operators to successfully complete stages 1 and 2 of the Sea Change for Sustainable Tourism program were acknowledged by the Business Development Manager of Sydney Marketing for Tourism NSW, Barbara de Rome, and the Mayor of Manly, Dr Peter Macdonald at an official awards ceremony held on 2/11/2005 at Manly Yacht Club.

All twelve businesses that received awards at the ceremony have completed a business sustainability checklist, attended a preliminary training workshop and completed a business audit as part of the Sea Change for Sustainable Tourism program curriculum.

Awardees were presented with their official Sea Change for Sustainable Tourism accreditation display stickers and certificates signifying their commitment to environmental and social responsibility.

The successful businesses are the North Fort National Artillery Museum, Sydney Sailing, The International College of Management Sydney, Manly Boat and Kayak Hire, Manly Surf School, Radisson Kestrel Hotel, Manly Kayaks, Oceanworld, Epic Surf Adventures, Sea Sydney Catamarans, Sydney Beach Volleyball School and the Manly Visitor Information Centre.
