Australian communities live with a variety of hazards, natural and human induced. Natural hazards include all those of climatic, geophysical or biological origin, while man made hazards include those arising from technology, human fault and hostile action.
On the Northern Beaches it is easy to forget about the hazards that we live with. In the last five years, the local community has dealt with many emergencies, including wild bush fires, extreme thunderstorms and flooding, and landslips. Often our response to these emergencies rely on highly trained volunteers from the State Emergency Service and Rural Fire Service but can also include Police, Fire Brigade, Public Utilities, Welfare and Health Services.
Co-ordinating a multi-agency response to these emergencies is the Manly Warringah Pittwater Local Emergency Management Committee. (LEMC)
The goals of your Local Emergency Management Committee are:
-
Prevent or reduce the impact of emergencies;
-
Ensure the preparedness of our Community;
-
Provide an effective and co-ordinated response to the emergency;
-
Provide for the recovery of our Community.
Your Local Emergency Management Committee has prepared a local disaster plan MWP DISPLAN August 2005 - 327 KB
The DISPLAN is the key document for identifying roles, responsibilities, control and co-ordination of emergency operations at the local level. This document links with District and State Level Disaster Plans should the scale of the disaster require resources not available within the local community. The DISPLAN can be activated by the Local Emergency Operations Controller (LEOCON). This is currently the Northern Beaches Area Commander of the NSW Police Service. The Committee is chaired by a senior representative of Council, the Local Emergency Management Officer (LEMO).
