Stormwater Treatment and Re-Use

Manly BeachThe Stormwater Management Project is an innovative project set in a highly populated coastal area with a high level of impervious surfaces. Ultra urban catchments such as the Pine Street subcatchment transport significant contaminants in the stormwater to the North Steyne Beach. These contaminants are treated by the Treatment Train approach to enable the collected stormwater to be reused for irrigation of the Historic Norfolk Pines at North Steyne.

The STAR Project has been developed in reponse to community and council concern over continued water quality problems associated with stormwater run off and negative impacts on swimming.

National and International Significance

The STAR project is one of eight National showcase projects that receive contributions from the Commonwealth Government's Urban Stormwater Initiative, part of The Coast and Clean Seas program.

As such the project has been visited by delegations from China, Korea, Hong Kong and India, as well as many inter-state visits from Councils.

The project also has demonstration capacity for tertiary student field trips, industry, the commercial sector and other Councils.
