Safety First
At Manly Council, we take safety seriously.
There are some special rules for bike riders, designed to ensure the safety of both riders and the public. The road is there to share.
Riding on the footpath
- Children under 12 years and accompanying riders may ride on any footpath unless specifically prohibited by signs. Keep left and give way to pedestrians.
Bike equipment
- Bicycles must have an effective brake and bell (ting ting!) and if used at night, must have a front and rear light and reflector.
- Keep your bike well serviced.
- Consider safety equipment like flags, reflectors and bright clothing to make it easy for others to see you. You can now have your bicycle registered at the local police station. Details at your local bicycle shop.
Helmets
- All riders of bicycles must wear a Standards Australia approved bicycle helmet.
- Wear your helmet securely fastened and make sure it is a good fit.
- Always consider others using the path, especially the young and elderly, and if the path is very busy, dismount and walk.
Scooter riders, skateboarders and inline skaters.
- All skaters should wear a well fitting helmet and other protective gear like wrist, elbow and knee pads. Take extra care when skating on rough surfaces.
Riding on footpath
- Children under 12 years of age may ride a scooter on any footpath unless specifically prohibited by signs. Skateboarders and inline skaters may skate on any footpath regardless of age unless specifically prohibited by signs.
Riding on the road
- Skaters can use only minor roads (those with no line markings) and only between dawn and dusk.
