Plan of Management for Community Land

Marine_ManlyLagoon_2 What is a Plan of Management?

Under the Local Government Act. 1993, Council is required to prepare 'Plans of Management' for certain lands ('Community Land') under its control. Community Land must be used and managed in accordance
with the Plan of Management.

This is all part of a larger process of managing all public land. A component of this is to classify public land vested in or under control
of Council as either 'operational' or 'community'. Broadly, community
land is that which is to be kept for use by the general public and would ordinarily comprise land such as a public park. Operational land on
the other hand can be bought and sold and would ordinarily comprise
land held as a temporary asset or as an investment and which facilitates the Council to carry out its functions and/or land which may not be open to the general public (eg a works depot). Plans of Management are not required for operational land.

A Plan of Management provides the opportunity for the community to state what it wants to see done with the land, and the ways in which this can be achieved.
