There are many sources and causes of pollution. Some are hard to avoid, others are controllable at a local level.

As a lifestyle and a tourist attraction, it's the pristine waterways and bushland that helps make the Manly area unique.

Manly Council lists the prevention of pollution as a key environmental outcome. This is done through active regulation, as well as programs and regulation.

Air Quality

In large urban areas air quality is impacted by numerous pollutants emitted from many sources such as industrial, commercial, residential and transport activities. The Metropolitan Air Quality Study (MAQS) demonstrated that overnight and early morning summer land breezes carry air borne pollutants out to sea. The afternoon sea breezes carry this pollution back on shore, over Manly, and concentrate it in the Sydney Basin.

Noise Pollution

Noise pollution from pool pumps, air conditioners and barking dogs can have detrimental effects on people's health and interfere with their quality of life.

Water Pollution

Being almost completely surrounded by water, water pollution is a key issue for Manly, with a number of common sources of water pollution.
